Chiddingly Church boasts two carvings of the Pelham Buckle in its stonework.
They are to be seen on both sides of the stonework surrounding the west door,
and the left hand one, if you are facing the door, is in better condition than
the right hand one.
The history of the Pelham Buckle is lengthy, but in this instance the
presence of the
Buckle carved into the stonework demonstrates that the Pelham family would have
been closely associated with the building of this tower. Chiddingly's
stone tower
would have been constructed at a later date, after the main body of the church
was built.
It is conceivable that our stone tower probably replaced an earlier wooden tower.
