The Rev. Herring and Potatoes

This memorial is to the Revd John Herring, who died in 1776.

It is inscribed:  "In memory of the Revd John Herring, who was Vicar of this Parish 28 years,
departed this life December 28th 1776 aged 67 years."

He is believed to be the first person to introduce potatoes to the district from Devonshire,
The Parish accounts refer to "half a bushel of potatoes" bought for the workhouse.

He is buried under this grave slab in the entrance porch.
