The inscription at the base says "In memory of John Day of Uckfield
House, who died
15th February 1876 aged 70 years."

1808 to Thomas Day and Mary Wood.
John Day married Emily
Hobson and had 10 children.
Uckfield House was situated half a mile north-east of Uckfield.
