There was once a Rood
Screen under the chancel arch, which separated the chancel area from the
nave, the main part of the church.
If you look up to the chancel arch, you can see the now-plugged holes where the
uprights of the screen were fixed into the arch.
The word "rood" derives from the Saxon word for "Cross", and these screens typically bore centrally a large Cross or Crucifix.
A Cross is essentially a plain cross of whatever material is used; a Crucifix
is a Cross which also has the figure of a crucified
Jesus upon it.
